My Summer 2017 TBR!

Thursday, July 6, 2017

Hello, lovelies! HAPPY JULY! How's everybody doing? Personally, I'm still wrapping my mind around the fact that it's July. How did it get here so quickly??

I love July, though. It's pretty much the epitome of summer. And what's summer the perfect time for?

B O O K S

Seeing as I'm horrifically behind on my Goodreads challenge, I thought that I'd put together my summer TBR as motivation to finally get caught up. I asked on Twitter if you guys would be interested in a post about it, and the sheer enthusiasm of the fabulous waffle queen herself, Abbie, made me decide to go for it. So without further ado, here are some of the books that I'm most excited to read this summer!

-----

The Blood Race by K.A. Emmons

My sweet, sweet friend, Kate, is releasing her first novel, and I am absolutely bursting to tell the world about it. I was lucky enough to get an ARC, and at twelve chapters in I already love it. It's such an intriguing, suspenseful read, and I could not be prouder of her.

The Color Project by Sierra Abrams

Never doubt the power of Twitter for promotional purposes. I first heard about this novel on social media, and am now absolutely dying to read it. Sierra is so sweet, and this looks like the cutest novel in the history of ever. I admit I'm kind of terrified to read it because everyone who's read it seems to come out emotionally destroyed, but I'm excited nonetheless!

Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys

This book has been on my TBR forever, and I've finally gotten my hands on a copy. I'm slightly nervous because Salt to the Sea absolutely tore my heart apart, but it was so beautifully written. I can't wait to read another of Sepetys's novels!

A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway

I've wanted to read more of Hemingway's work for ages, so I'm really hoping to read A Farewell to Arms this summer! I actually checked it out from the library a while back and never had the chance to read it, so I'm planning to knock it off the TBR very soon.

Les Misérables by Victor Hugo

You all know that I absolutely love theatre. But somehow, I've never actually gotten around to reading Les Mis. It's so long that it's one of those books that I've just never taken the time to read. I definitely want to fix that this summer!!

Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow

Also in the Broadway realm, the book that inspired Lin Manuel-Miranda to create something beautiful, Alexander Hamilton. I guess you could say that I can't throw away my shot to read this. ;)

The Long Game by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

You all know that I absolutely loved The Fixer, and I cannot wait to read the sequel! I'm kind of terrified because I'm so attached to the characters, and I don't want anyone to die, but I'm also super excited. I can't wait to see if it lives up to the original book!

Go Set A Watchman by Harper Lee

I've heard mixed reviews on this book, so I really want to read it for myself. I'm super curious to see if I like it!

The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis

The Screwtape Letters has always sounded super interesting, and I'd really like to read it. I haven't read a lot of Lewis's work, but I'm really hoping to pick this up sometime soon.

-----

So tell me, what's the best book you've read lately? What's on your summer TBR?

    1. Oh my gosh, your friends are seeing it again?!? Dying, it's fine.

I don't know! I really could never get into Narnia, so I kind of just stopped trying. I may attempt reading it one more time. I have read some of Mere Christianity, although I don't remember if I fully finished it or not..if not I need to do that. xD

  7. July. Like, how could it be July already? So much reading left to do. Which is why I love this post!

I love your list and added a few more items to my (very long) Goodreads To Read list :) The only one I've read from this list is Screwtape Letters, which taught me a lot.

Currently I'm reading "The Time in Between," a WWII dressmaker/spy/romance novel that is SUPERB. And I'm reading a Louie Giglio book "I Am Not but I Know I AM." Also highly recommend!

Oh my goodness, do I follow you on Goodreads? I can't remember! I'll have to check on that. ;) I'm really interested to read Screwtape Letters- it's always looked like such an interesting book.

Ooh, I'll have to check those books out ASAP! They sound fantastic!

  9. YES DEAR LORD LES MISERABLES. It's really long, but the prose is so beautiful and thought-provoking if you properly sink your teeth into it; the pages fly right by! I got through it by committing to 100 pages a day over spring break. :)

I liked Go Set a Watchman, but it didn't leave a huge impression on me. I'm rather ambivalent on the whole Atticus matter, because I think you can interpret the things he says in a ton of different ways when you actually put the quotes in context. I hope you enjoy it!

AHHH NOW YOU'VE MADE ME SUPER NERVOUS ABOUT SALT TO THE SEA. It's a required summer read at my school, and I'm scared it'll either destroy me or I won't like it at all *bites nails*

Love this post! Seeing other bloggers' TBRs is always so fun (though it does nothing to diminish the size of my own). Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia is my favorite recent read, and I plan to read The Thief by Stephanie Landsem, Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, and The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald before school starts :)

I'm interested to finally be able to have an opinion on Go Set a Watchman! I've heard so many different thoughts, I'm so curious.

SALT TO THE SEA IS AMAZING OH MY GOODNESS. I loved it.

I love checking out people's TBR's! I'll have to look up those books you mentioned on Goodreads- because obviously I need to add EVEN MORE books to the never ending TBR. xD

  17. Ooooh I've been wanting to read something by Ruta Sepetys for AGES. I've been eyes Salt to the Sea ... And the Screwtape Letters are SO GOOD. I just read it this year and I loved it! I would suggest taking your time with it though, because there is sooo much to digest. He wrote it over a 20 year period, and he was such an amazing thinker, so you can imagine just how much thought and knowledge is packed in there. Also, I had the honor of being a beta reader for Sierra, and I got to read The Color Project in its second draft. You're going to love it so much! It's such an amazing story, and Sierra is such a beautiful writer.

    Overall, your TBR rocks :D

Wow, I had no idea that he spent so long writing the Screwtape Letters! I'll definitely keep that as a book to read slowly. :)

Oh my goodness, you beta'd TCP? I'm so jealous! XD I can't wait to read it!!

Thanks for stopping by, Hannah! <3

Good books I've read this summer... hm... The Seeds of America series was a really good, as well as Code Name Verity. AHHHH. I listened to it. It was truly amazing and I loved it.

  21. RUTA'S NOVELS ARE LITTERALLY SOME OF THE BEST.
and I've heard of more than one adult book club having one of her's as their study, even though she's a 'young adult' writer.
it doesn't matter. her writing and story lines are so borderless.
you're gonna cry at that one.
    just saying.
