My Almost-Epic-Fail : Baking Style

Sunday, October 5, 2014

If you know me in real life, your first thought upon seeing the title was probably, "Grace Anne, why did you try to bake? Are you trying to kill someone???" You see, I don't exactly have the best history with baking. As in, I'm the girl who's able to screw up a muffin mix. Yep. I've done that. Multiple times. Don't ask.
But, since it's October, I thought, "Why not try to do some Halloween baking? Come on. Surely you can find SOMETHING that works out!"
I have yet to find that something.
So foolish, innocent me ran to the place that we all go to for creative recipes- Pinterest. I soon found a cute cupcake idea that I decided I would try. It seemed simple enough- a basic chocolate cupcake, with cream cheese icing swirled into the shape of a ghost on top. Simple. Delicious. What's not to love? As it turned out, quite a bit.
I started out with the cupcake. They actually turned out pretty good! True, it was a box mix, but still- I did it! For me, that's good. Next, the nightmare began. The icing.
It seemed simple enough- a basic cream cheese icing recipe. I've done that before, and I love cream cheese, so it sounded fabulous. It started out alright, mixing up cream cheese and butter, vanilla, and powder sugar. That's where my problem started. The icing was WAAAAY too thin. Like, drippy. Looking at this picture, it kind of looks like pancake mix. Wow. Good job, self, good job. There was no way that I'd be able to form cute swirly ghosts out of that. I took a picture for you all of my lovely thin icing..
Note the dripping from the beaters. Yep. I made that.
So it was obvious by this point that my initial plan would not work out. After talking with my mom about what on earth I could do to save this poor icing, we decided to make the ghosts with whipped cream instead of icing, and to use the cream cheese icing on some yummy pumpkin bars. We also used some of the icing on a couple of cupcakes with a little mallow creme pumpkin for a fall twist. So, how does it all look?
We also made pumpkin bars, but they aren't really photo-worthy. (plus, I'm awful at pictures, so, y'know...)
Anyways, they don't look perfect, but they taste AMAZING. So, at least they taste good! I'm kind of disappointed that they aren't cutesy, but hey, they're delicious. :) So what do you guys think? Any funny food fails?
