The Idiocy of Apathy

Saturday, March 18, 2017

Y'know what's really not cool?

Apathy.

"Apathy. Noun. Lack of interest, enthusiasm, or concern."

Basically, you just don't care. And yeah, I get that you think it's cool to be super chill all the time and not really care about anything. But allow me to let you in on a little secret. It's not.

Maybe I care too much. Or maybe I'm just sick of being surrounded by apathetic people 24/7. Either way, I want to talk about this for a second.

A lot of people that I know are superbly apathetic. They genuinely don't care about anything, except maybe having a good time, and they make this known. Spending time with people like this drains me to no end.

How do you do that? How do you just..not care? Do you not have any passion? Any ambition? Does nothing in you want to go further?

People think that they're super cool when they just go with the flow and don't care about anything, but they're not. They're really not.

You know what is cool?

Caring.

Being passionate about something. Having dreams. Having something in your life that makes you want to get out of bed and do things every day. Being involved in the lives of people around you. Not just floating through life like a piece of dandelion fluff.

When I talk to someone who's just completely apathetic, I usually walk away from the conversation wanting to slap some sense into them. Why do you not want to care about something? I genuinely don't get it. But there's nothing cooler than talking to someone with some real ambitions. Somebody who has a dream and is figuring out a way to get there. Someone who tells you about their passion with a fire in their eyes. Those are the kind of people who excite me.

I get that being apathetic is really easy. It's easier to not care- about people, about the future. To just float through life without a care.

But please, don't live that way.

Find something that you care about, and pursue it. Work for it. Fight for it. Don't give in to apathy. Chase that dream of yours. You can do this.

p.s. If you want to read an even cooler post on apathy, go hit up my friend Rachel's blog. She absolutely nailed it.

  2. PREACH THIS GIRL. <3 We need to start caring more. People look down in a condescending matter because I care about everything and I cry when I get upset over things that I incredibly care about, but you know what? Those people can go off somewhere else. There may be faults in each and all of us, but at least we embrace them and try to improve.

  3. People with passion are the best people to talk to. They're inspiring. They make you believe they can achieve whatever they dream, and you feel like you can too.

And can I just say, your post was both passionate and inspiring! I'm gonna go be passionate. Introvert-passionate. ;)

  4. WOW this post is so good. <3 <3 I've never really thought about apathy as being a bad thing—actually, I haven't really thought about apathy in general ;) —but you are so right. Showing passion about something means so much more . . . to everyone. Thank you for this post. <3

  6. Grace, I TOTALLY agree. It's easy just to wait for the next weekend and consider every other part of life a bore. I know some people like that and I just want to force their faces into a smile every now and then!

  9. Everyone falls into apathy every once in awhile, and occasionally it's used as a coping mechanism during rough times, but I 100% agree with this post. Being surrounded by general apathy all the time is super draining.

    1. True, I totally understand apathy as a coping mechanism. But it is SUPER draining when it's constant.

  10. Oh. Yes.
It's so true! When you're just a cold fish and don't care about people, SOCIETY HAS MARKED IT AS NICE. I agree with Jollygirl when she said it is amazing to be around people who are really passionate about things. Thanks for this post, Grace Anne!!

  11. I love this so much; I totally agree. One problem is this: I don't believe that very many people are *truly* apathetic... But I notice so many, many peers who try very hard to come across as apathetic, and that's sad. Caring is cool, yo!
Thanks for putting this into words <3

    1. True. People really try to come off as not caring about anything, which is kind of odd.

  13. I absolutely agree with this. I know a lot of people who certain present as apathetic (whether or not they truly are) and they are the hardest people to spend any time with. But it's also hard to be a passionate, driven person around them also, because half the time they seem don't to understand. But at the same time, I can't imagine doing anything other than chasing after the things that mean something to me!

  14. I totally agree with you. However, I do think there needs to be a balance. We need to be wise in what we care about, and be careful not to put our energies into things that don't matter.
    Great post!

^ Oh my goodness, yes. I have met some of these type of people and I just don't understand! I don't know if they have passions and are just suppressing them real deep down? It's confusing. I definitely don't envy them. I would rather care and have a bleeding heart for others, too! :)
